“While the program is even stronger, there is yet much to be done, many problems to be solved. But confidence that our goals in space can be met is growing in parallel with the increasing determination to succeed.”
This quarterly report begins with a brief look at modifications made to the Apollo spacecraft—a direct result of the research and development that took place in the wake of the Apollo 1 accident. (For a more detailed look at how the tragedy impacted the design and safety of the Apollo spacecraft, see the next film in this exhibit.) The report then introduces us to the flight crew for the first manned Apollo mission, Apollo 7, and covers the mission objectives. We also get a look at the progress made towards the Saturn V missions, including Apollo 4, the first flight of the Saturn V launch vehicle. After covering the development and testing of Apollo modules and flight hardware, this report next overviews research provided by two recent lunar investigations, Lunar Orbiter 4 and Surveyor 3. The report concludes with a closer look at the developing Apollo Applications Program and some of the technology NASA specifically designed for it.
