Before landing astronauts on the Moon, NASA used the Surveyor craft to get a closer look at Earth’s natural satellite, discovering more about the composition of the lunar surface and searching for spots potentially suitable for a manned lunar landing. Beyond looking at the Moon, however, the Surveyor program was important in testing launch, landing, and support systems—such as communication systems and landing technology—designed to carry a spacecraft to the Moon.
